Emergency | Business Office > Facilities > Shutdown Notices PB Sci Utility Shutdowns, Building Closures, and Road Closures September 13, 2008 (Sat) Science Hill, PG&E Power Shutdown The campus has scheduled a five-hour electrical shutdown from 4 AM to 9 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2008. It is possible that the shutdown will last only four hours, but you should be prepared for five hours. During this shutdown, there will be no PG&E power to Science Hill. The campus co-generation engine* (Cogen) will be on-line during this shutdown to power the following science buildings: While these buildings will have power, we recommend reducing power use in ALL buildings, as much as possible, to decrease likelihood of a Cogen problem. The following buildings are NOT served by Cogen, and will rely solely on their stand-by generators for power: Earth & Marine Sciences, In order to conserve energy during the shutdown, please stock refrigerators and freezers ahead of time with blue ice or dry ice as appropriate, and turn-off all non-critical equipment before leaving work on Friday, September 12. This shutdown is being scheduled in order to minimize the duration of an extensive electrical infrastructure renovation project planned for Winter break (duration decreases from 5 days to 2.5 days). These projects are required to bolster the campus grid against catastrophic failure, by replacing and upgrading aging cables, switchgear, and other equipment at the campus's main Merrill College Substation. The timing for this shutdown was determined by the campus to impact the least number of campus occupants. Additional information regarding precautionary measures for Earth & Marine Sciences and Physical Sciences buildings and the Physical Sciences PB Sci divisional computer servers will follow. September 10, 2008 (Wed) NS2 Ventilation System, Including Fume Hoods
FROM 6:30 AM UNTIL 10:00 AM. This shutdown will affect the building ventilation (heating and A/C) and fume hoods. During this time, there will be no mechanical air flow throughout the building. Please remember to close your fume hood sashes the evening prior to this shutdown and refrain from working with hazardous materials anywhere in the building during this four hour shutdown period. The reason for this shutdown is to perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance, and filter replacement. September 8 -11, 2008 (Mon/ Thur) PSB Standby Generator There will be a four-day shutdown of the stand-by generator that serves PSB. This shutdown should be completely invisible to building occupants. However, if PG&E were to experience a power outage In the unlikely event that PG&E were to experience an outage lasting longer than 4-6 hours, the campus would attempt to use the Cogen engine The reason for the shut down is to repair an exhaust manifold cooling water leak. September 3 - 6, 2008 (Wed/Mon) Stage 1 Alert - Cooling Water for Lab Equipment & Building Air Conditioning THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HEAT ADVISORY FOR WEDNESDAY, 9/3/08 THROUGH MONDAY 9/6/08. This testing requires the entire building to be silenced, except for rooms 106 109 111, where new horns and strobes WILL activate. Most occupants will not hear or see these alarms during the test. During this two-hour testing period, if the building alarm sounds, or if you smell smoke, or if you recognize any other signs that there may be a fire in the building, please respond accordingly, as if it were a real alarm situation. The reason for this shutdown is to accommodate testing of newly installed fire smoke dampers, strobes and horns in rooms 106, 109, and 111. March 14, 2008 (Friday) Sinsheimer False Fire Alarm - Malfunction of Panel This morning's fire alarm was caused by a malfunction in the fire alarm control panel. An alarm tech was on site working on the system, when the alarm tripped. The tech immediately notified UCSC Dispatch of the false alarm, and therefore UCSC Fire Department did not respond. Because the alarm was a malfunction within the panel, much of the south wing of the building did not receive an alarm. However, most of the building evacuated as required, which was both impressive and appreciated. All fire alarms should be treated as a serious event. We apologize for the inconvenience of this event, and we are working with Dispatch to improve our notification process, in the event of a false alarm. UCSC Alarm Shop is also working to determine the cause of the malfunction. March 12, 2008 - All Day PSB Fume Hood Testing On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, contractors will return to conduct follow-up Cal/OSHA mandated tests on ONLY exhausting hoods in PSB that did NOT pass the initial testing (see list below). For these tests, each hood will need to be out of service for approximately an hour while nitrous oxide (a testing agent) will be flowed and monitored as part of the process. Hoods are to be tested "as used" so it does not require disassembly of apparatus or emptying the hood. If however, there are materials incompatible with the nitrous oxide, or if it would affect your research, you will need to notify us of your specific situation/concerns that will need to be addressed. All hoods must be tested within this process. Testing will take place most of the day on March 12th. If you have any questions or problems, please contact Jim Schoonover (9-5182 or jamess@ucsc.edu). We appreciate your patience and accommodation of this legally required testing. The following is the schedule for each building on Science Hill: December 15, 2007 (Saturday) December 16, 2007 (Sunday) December 28, 2007 (Friday)
*** 2ND SHUTDOWN POSTPONED- SCIENCE HILL POWER *** The second two-hour shutdown of campus power that was scheduled for later this week has been postponed until next week. At this time, we do not have a firm date or time for this shutdown, but as soon as we know, we will send out updated information. As many of you know, there was a delay in shutting down the power this past Monday, 12/17/07. This was due to unforeseen issues. For next weeks shutdown, we have asked Physical Plant to post a recorded update on the 459-INFO campus line. Here you will be able to get updated information about the status of the shutdown. Contingency Planning: The campus co-generation engine (Cogen) will be on-line during this shutdown to fully power the following buildings during the power outage: Sinsheimer, Nat Sci II, Nat Sci II Annex, ISB, CfAO, JBEB, LICK Surge Buildings, Paleo Lab, Dive Trailer, Science Library, Health Center, Fire Station, Communications Building, East Filed House & Central Heat Plant Buildings NOT served by Cogen will rely solely on their stand-by generators for back-up power. Note: Stand-by generators do not fully power buildings, but only supply power to the equipment that is specifically connected to the stand-by generator. These buildings include: Thimann (for this shutdown only), Earth & Marine Sciences, Physical Sciences, and conditionally Baskin Engineering. Users are strongly encouraged to review their own emergency plans, and begin saving and packing refrigerators and freezers with blue ice, or other frozen material. Extra dry ice will not be available during this shutdown. Please prepare or turn off your computer workstations and other sensitive electronic equipment prior to this shutdown. Even buildings served by Cogen may experience slight power glitches while the electrical load is transferred. December 17, 2007 (Monday) *** SHUTDOWN - SCIENCE HILL POWER *** We have just been informed by Physical Plant that there will be a TWO-HOUR SHUTDOWN OF CAMPUS POWER TODAY, 12/17/07, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM. There is a second planned two-hour outage, tentatively scheduled for later this week, either Thursday or Friday. Additional information will be sent out as soon as it has been confirmed. As part of the campus electrical upgrade, it has become necessary to shutdown the main power feed to Science Hill to accommodate this work. Contingency Planning: The campus co-generation engine (Cogen) will be on-line during this shutdown to power the following buildings during the power outage: Sinsheimer, Thimann, Natural Sci II, ISB, CfAO, JBEB, LICK Surge Buildings, Paleo Lab, Dive Trailer, Science Library, Health Center, Fire Station, Communications Building, East Filed House & Central Heat Plant Buildings NOT served by Cogen will rely solely on their stand-by generators. Earth & Marine Sciences, Physical Sciences, and conditionally Baskin Engineering. Users are strongly encouraged to review their own emergency plans, and begin saving and packing refrigerators and freezers with blue ice, or other frozen material. Extra dry ice will not be available during this shutdown. Please prepare or shut down your computer workstations and other sensitive electronic equipment prior to this shutdown. Even buildings served by Cogen may experience slight power glitches while the electrical load is transferred. December 6-31, 2007 Nat Sci 2 & Thimann Fume Hood Retrofit Project Over the next several weeks, Physical Plant and contractors will be retrofitting fume hoods in Nat Sci 2 and Thimann, with flow monitors to comply with new standards. This may result in a temporary disruption of access to your hoods. The hoods will also need to be cleared sufficiently to enable this work to be performed. In many cases, electricians will also need to install junction boxes. The project manager will coordinate the scheduling of the work, but will need you to respond promptly to ensure a smooth process and limit interruption of your research. If you have questions or problems, please contact Jim Schoonover (9-5182 or jamess@ucsc.edu). December 14, 2007 (Friday) Sinsheimer South Wing (All floors) - DI Water Shutdown There will be a 4-hour shutdown of the De-ionized Water on Friday, 12/14/07, from 8:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. The reason for the shutdown is to accommodate the CERM Project room alteration in room 109. December 13, 2007 (Thursday) Sinsheimer North Wing (All floors) - ICW, IHW Shutdown There will be a 4-hour shutdown of the Industrial Hot and Industrial Cold Water on Thursday, 12/13/07, from 8:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. The reason for the shutdown is to accommodate the CERM Project room alteration in 137B. December 5, 2007 (Wednesday) Sinshiemer Fire Alarm System Shutdown- First Floor ONLY An all day shutdown of the first floor fire alarm system has been scheduled for Wednesday, 12/5/07. The shutdown will take place between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. If during this shutdown, you see or smell anything that leads you to believe there is a fire anywhere in the building, please evacuate the building and call 911. The reason for this shutdown is to accommodate new work in rooms 106-111 and 137B. December 4, 2007 (Tuesday) Nat sci 2 - Multiple Lab Utility Shutdown: On Tuesday, December 4th, from 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM, there will be a shutdown in the following rooms, affecting the following utilities: Room 143 - ICW/IHW/DI The reason for the shutdown is to accommodate utility tie-in for lab work in room 261. Key: December 3 - 10, 2007 Fire Alarm Testing/Maintenance - Kresge Annex A The Physical Plant mechanics will be testing of the fire alarm systems of several campus buildings, beginning on Monday, 12/3/07, and ending Monday, 12/10/07. This testing will include Kresge Annex A and neighboring buildings. Exact dates/times have not been specified, as the testing must remain flexible in case emergency repairs are needed. IF YOU DO HEAR AN ALARM, RESPOND AS YOU WOULD TO A REGULAR FIRE ALARM SITUATION. Potential Building/Equipment Cooling Issues - Spring/Summer/Fall 07 Physical plant has informed the Division of a potential building and equipment cooling shortage on Science Hill for this upcoming spring, summer and fall. With the recent addition of Engineering 2, and Physical Sciences buildings, the central cooling/condensing water system, that provides cooling for all buildings and equipment on Science Hill, is currently over capacity. During peak loads, on very hot and humid days, the system is not able to keep up with the demand. Plans are in place to install additional cooling equipment which will increase the capacity to meet the demand, and give us some room to grow. However, this new system will not be installed until next spring. To avoid causing an overload of the system this year, which could result in a failure of the cooling system, Physical Plant will be implementing a staged reduction of cooling service. This reduction will be put into place, based on hot weather patterns, and only if it is absolutely necessary. The reductions are designed to prevent the Science Hill cooling infrastructure from becoming damaged, which could cause a system-wide failure. The PB Sci Facilities office will be working closely with Physical Plant to ensure that advance notification will be provided to all building occupants prior to a reduction of cooling. These notifications will come to you directly from the Physical Plant Work Order Desk, as a "Stage 1 or Stage 2 Cooling Alert" A Stage 1 Alert will notify all building occupants of hot and humid weather in the forecast for our area. It will include proactive reductions in building and equipment cooling loads. Physical Plant will reduce non-critical buildings first, in an attempt to A Stage 2 Alert will be an emergency notification that all cooling loads must be reduced immediately. it will include more reductions in building and equipment cooling loads. IN PREPARATION FOR A POSSIBLE REDUCTION of building and equipment cooling, please consider the following proactive measures that could reduce the demand for cooling of your equipment, and make it run more efficiently. Voluntary heat load reduction, and improving efficiency will help in the overall demand on the Science Hill cooling system. 1. Ultra-low freezers - Check and clean air filters prior to the onset of hot weather. During a COOLING WATER ALERT: 1. Close all fume hood sashes that are not in use. When Physical Plant implements a Stage 1 or Stage 2 alert and/or reduction, you will receive an email directly from the Physical Plant Work Order Desk. PB Sci Facilities will follow up with an email, detailing more specific actions that are being taken, and how you can best respond. We will soon be contacting all department managers and chairs to obtain more specific information about your equipment and | ||||||||||||||
